In order for universities to accomplish their mission in acquiring and spreading knowledge, it is imperative that not only staff but students as well, support free speech. The speech one safeguards must also be diverse in perspectives. It is easy to embrace free speech if the speech affirms your prior beliefs, but it is much more difficult to listen to ideas we disagree with – Thus we need to welcome all speech from all people. With this mindset, we can serve the people in higher education and promote intellectual freedom. I explored this issue through interviews of students and faculty at UNC-CH.
